The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), part of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has proposed a draft amendment to the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018, focusing on eco-friendly packaging practices for paan masala. The new regulations suggest incorporating naturally derived materials such as paper, paperboard, and cellulose, which are recognized for their food safety and environmental benefits. The draft explicitly prohibits the use of plastic materials, including polyethene, polypropylene, and any synthetic polymers, as well as aluminum foil or metallized layers, aligning with the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016. While promoting sustainable practices, the amendment allows for the continued use of traditional packaging formats like tin and glass, providing manufacturers with flexibility. Stakeholders are invited to review the draft and submit feedback within 30 days, ensuring that the final regulations are practical and beneficial for the industry.
