In a significant operation, the health department in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, seized approximately 1,500 kg of spurious desi ghee during a raid conducted near Gill Chowk on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, the officials discovered that the ghee was allegedly stored for distribution across the city. Preliminary investigations revealed that the ghee was procured from other states at a suspiciously low price of ₹240 per kg, raising concerns about its quality. Additionally, the raid uncovered expired food items, including skimmed milk that had surpassed its 2024 expiry date, indicating serious compliance violations. Four samples, including two of desi ghee, one of skimmed milk, and one of multi-source edible oil, have been sent for laboratory testing to assess their safety. District health officer Dr. Ashish Chawla, along with food safety officers Yogesh Goyal and Jatinder Virk, led the operation. Civil surgeon Dr. Ramandeep Kaur emphasized that strict action would be taken against violators, and Dr. Chawla noted that monitoring has been intensified. Proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act have begun, with officials suspecting a larger network involved in the distribution of spurious products.
