Professor Susan Elias has made history by becoming the first woman principal of St Stephen’s College in New Delhi, a prestigious institution with a rich legacy spanning 145 years. In an interview, she expressed excitement about her new role, emphasizing that her selection was based on her strong academic and technological background rather than gender. With 15 years of experience in artificial intelligence (AI) and related research, Elias aims to leverage these strengths to enhance the skills of students, faculty, and alumni. Her immediate goal is to familiarize herself with the college's admission process, while her long-term vision includes encouraging students to become job creators rather than just job seekers. She believes that integrating entrepreneurship with the college's strong foundation in humanities and liberal arts will create alternative career pathways. Elias acknowledges the challenges posed by AI in education but views it as a tool to enhance human capability rather than a replacement. Originally from Kerala and raised in Chennai, she is eager to explore Delhi and contribute to the college’s legacy while nurturing a new generation of entrepreneurs and innovators.
