Samsung has launched the Certified Re-Newed program in India, providing refurbished Galaxy series smartphones at competitive prices. This initiative is a response to the 14-15% increase in prices for new smartphones, driven by rising costs of RAM and NAND flash storage chips. Under this program, devices undergo a rigorous refurbishment process, including inspection and software validation, and are restored with genuine Samsung components. Each refurbished phone is reset to remove previous data and comes with the latest software updates. Samsung promises six years of Android updates for mid-range models and seven years for premium models, along with a one-year manufacturer's warranty. The smartphone market in India has seen a 2% decline in shipments year-on-year, attributed to these rising costs, with further declines expected in 2026. As major semiconductor firms prioritize production for AI services, the trend of offering refurbished devices is likely to grow among smartphone manufacturers.
