This change follows a recent restructuring by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also appointed Ashok Lahiri as the new vice chairman. The NITI Aayog, established on January 1, 2015, replaced the Planning Commission and aims to foster cooperative federalism in India. The new appointments come as replacements for prominent economists who previously handled critical areas such as agriculture, trade, science and technology, and health policy, including roles during the COVID-19 pandemic.
