The National Commission for Women (NCW) has responded to the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl in Cheyyar, a town in Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, by seeking a detailed action report from the police within five days. The NCW condemned the brutal assault, highlighting the urgent need for stronger protective measures for young girls. Commission chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar directed the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure the prompt registration of a First Information Report (FIR) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The police have already registered a case and are questioning three individuals in connection with the incident. The girl, who was staying at her grandmother's house, is currently hospitalized in Kancheepuram. Political leaders from the AIADMK and BJP have criticized the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government for its handling of women's safety, calling for immediate action against the perpetrators and improvements in law enforcement.
