Karnataka Police have arrested Devraj, an Armed Police Constable serving as a gunman for Ballari Superintendent of Police Suman Pennekar, along with Sairam, for allegedly extorting ₹3 lakh (approximately $3,600 USD) from a laborer named Sharabhayya. The laborer reported that three men, who identified themselves as personnel from the SP's office, intercepted two vehicles transporting ration rice to Andhra Pradesh. Initially demanding ₹5 lakh, the extortionists reportedly settled for ₹3 lakh after threatening to seize the vehicles. Following the complaint filed on May 6, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. While Devraj and Sairam have been arrested and remanded in judicial custody, another suspect, Gadilinga, a practicing advocate, is currently absconding. SP Pennekar described the incident as a serious offense, emphasizing the need for public trust in law enforcement. She is overseeing the investigation and has initiated suspension proceedings against Devraj, while further inquiries are being conducted to determine if the accused have been involved in similar crimes previously.
