In Tamil Nadu, 3,500 students are currently enrolled in the online data science program offered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras as a second degree. Janani D, a student from SRM Easwari Engineering College, highlighted how her first degree provided theoretical knowledge, while the online program equipped her with technical skills, helping her secure a job in her first interview. IIT Madras has graduated two batches with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in this program, which emphasizes skill development alongside fundamental concepts. The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently allowed students to pursue one regular degree and one online degree simultaneously, although many colleges report that students are more interested in short-term, skill-oriented online courses. Principal Lilian Jasper from Women's Christian College noted that while many students initially enroll in online programs, a significant number drop out due to the demanding nature of regular studies.
