Chandrakant Patil, the higher and technical education minister of Maharashtra, has mandated ILS Law College in Pune to refund excess fees collected from students, along with six percent interest. This directive follows an inquiry initiated after the Bombay High Court's intervention, which found that the college had charged students without the necessary approval from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), violating the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016. The inquiry revealed that between the academic years 2020-21 and 2024-25, students were charged under multiple unapproved fee categories, with one student allegedly paying ₹1,04,863 across 17 different categories. The college has been instructed to issue refunds and submit a compliance report to the Directorate of Higher Education. Minister Patil emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring transparency and protecting students' academic interests, announcing plans to investigate similar complaints of excess fee collection in other colleges across Maharashtra.
