The swearing-in ceremony for Vijay, the chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is in jeopardy. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has expressed skepticism regarding the TVK's claim of having the necessary majority to form the government. TVK currently holds 108 seats in the Assembly and has garnered support from five Congress legislators, bringing its total to 112 MLAs, but this still falls short of the 118 seats required for a majority in the 234-member Assembly. During a meeting with the Governor, Vijay presented a letter detailing the support from the 108 MLAs backing his claim. The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has shifted significantly, with the TVK emerging as the single largest party in its debut election, while traditional parties like the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) faced setbacks, securing 47 and 59 seats respectively. The Governor has made it clear that the swearing-in will only proceed once Vijay can demonstrate a clear majority.
