The Delhi High Court has denied bail to a maulvi accused of raping a 17-year-old girl under the pretense of exorcising an evil spirit. Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma, in her ruling, stated that the accused exploited the victim's vulnerable physical and mental condition, as well as her family's blind faith in his spiritual healing claims. The victim was brought to the maulvi for treatment based on the belief that she was possessed. Instead of providing help, he allegedly abused her trust and assaulted her. The case, registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act in 2019, has seen the maulvi in judicial custody since October 10, 2019. His bail plea argued by advocate Sumit Sharma claimed violations of his rights due to prolonged custody and questioned the victim's testimony. However, the prosecution, represented by additional public prosecutor Naresh Chahar, opposed the plea, citing the serious nature of the allegations and the advanced state of the trial.
