The Bar Council of India (BCI) has formally requested Chief Justice of India Surya Kant to take administrative action against Justice Tarlada Rajasekhara Rao of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. This follows Justice Rao's controversial decision on May 5 to order a young advocate's judicial custody for 24 hours due to alleged objectionable behavior in presenting materials related to a litigant's lookout notice. The order was later rescinded after intervention from the High Court Advocates’ Association. In a letter to the Chief Justice, BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra expressed serious concerns regarding the judge's conduct, highlighting that the young advocate's treatment raised questions about judicial temperament and fairness. Mishra called for the judge to undergo judicial training, emphasizing that young lawyers should be corrected without humiliation and that the dignity of the Bar must be upheld. He pointed out that judges should command respect through fairness and restraint, not fear. The BCI is advocating for immediate institutional review of the incident, including examination of video recordings of the proceedings.
