In a significant milestone for global energy, renewable energy sources surpassed overall electricity demand growth in 2025, driven largely by record advancements in solar power in India and China. According to a report by the energy think tank Ember, clean power generation increased by 887 terawatt hours, while global electricity demand rose by 849 terawatt hours. This shift represents a pivotal moment in the fight against climate change, as renewables accounted for over one-third of the world's electricity mix for the first time, reaching 10,730 terawatt hours. Solar energy alone contributed to three-quarters of the increase in demand, demonstrating its growing importance in the energy landscape. Notably, fossil fuel generation saw a decline of 0.2%, a rare occurrence this century, with both China and India reporting reductions in fossil fuel use.
