In a landmark shift for the global energy sector, renewable energy generation surpassed overall electricity demand growth in 2025, driven primarily by record solar energy production in China and India. According to a report by the energy think tank Ember, clean power generation increased by 887 terawatt hours, outpacing the growth in global electricity demand, which stood at 849 terawatt hours. This growth resulted in renewables, including solar, wind, and hydropower, accounting for over 33% of the world's electricity mix, totaling 10,730 terawatt hours. Notably, solar energy alone grew by 30%, fulfilling three-quarters of the net rise in electricity demand. In a significant development, both China and India experienced declines in fossil fuel generation for the first time this century, with reductions of 0.9% and 3.3%, respectively. This change reflects a strategic pivot towards renewable energy sources. Additionally, the report highlights a 46% increase in battery storage capacity, which is essential for maximizing solar energy utilization beyond daylight hours.
