Lester T. Jones Jr., a former finance executive for the Atlanta Hawks, has been sentenced to three years and five months in federal prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud. Jones embezzled approximately $3.7 million by submitting fraudulent expense reimbursement requests and misusing corporate credit cards during his tenure from March 2016 to June 2025. As senior vice president for finance, he was responsible for managing the Hawks' corporate credit card account and the electronic expense reimbursement program. His illicit activities included charging personal expenses such as $80,000 in travel to the Bahamas and Thailand, $99,800 on luxury apparel at Saks Fifth Avenue, and over $160,000 on concert and sporting event tickets. U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg emphasized the breach of trust involved in Jones's actions, while FBI special agent Marlo Graham noted the importance of detecting and investigating financial crimes within organizations. The Atlanta Hawks declined to comment on the matter.
