The Maharashtra Government announced a 100-day verification and enforcement drive aimed at ensuring that taxi and autorickshaw drivers possess basic knowledge of Marathi. Starting from May 1 and running until August 15, the initiative will be implemented across all 59 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik stated that the campaign would include checks on permits and licenses, alongside an assessment of drivers' proficiency in Marathi. A committee led by Additional Transport Commissioner Ravindra Gaikwad will oversee the program, which aims to provide training rather than impose immediate penalties. While the government will not cancel licenses solely for language non-compliance, it will enforce existing regulations for transport violations. Training facilities will be established at RTOs, and materials will be provided to assist drivers in learning basic conversational Marathi. The initiative is supported by taxi unions, which have agreed to assist in the rollout of the training program, emphasizing the need for effective communication in Maharashtra's cultural context.
