Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced an urgent plan to construct 53 Automated Testing Stations (ATS) across the state, aiming to modernize vehicle fitness certification. This initiative is in response to the amended Central Motor Vehicle Rules, which mandate that fitness testing for transport vehicles be conducted through registered automated centres starting April 1, 2025. Currently, Maharashtra has about 4.33 crore registered vehicles, with approximately 36.8 lakh in the transport category, necessitating a reliable testing network. Seven ATS are already operational, and officials expect another 37 to be ready by the end of August 2024. The total project cost is estimated at ₹1,035 crore (around $125 million USD), with ₹337.74 crore already allocated by the central government. This project not only aims to enhance road safety and efficiency but also positions Maharashtra as a leader in India's transport reforms, with nearly one-fourth of the country's planned 214 ATS centres located within the state.
