The Maharashtra government is preparing to unveil a comprehensive Unmanned Systems Policy designed to boost the growth of the unmanned systems industry, which includes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous surface and underwater vehicles, and ground-based systems. This initiative aims to create a unified regulatory and promotional framework that goes beyond existing drone regulations. The policy will also address critical electronic and digital infrastructure needs, such as automated signaling and intelligent transport systems in urban areas, as well as agricultural support systems in rural regions. An Unmanned Systems Corporation will be established to act as both a regulatory and facilitative body. The draft policy is expected to be presented to the Cabinet soon. Industry representatives have voiced concerns regarding the need for subsidies, testing infrastructure, and better representation in policymaking, especially as other states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh offer more incentives. The lack of in-state testing zones and clarity on regulations in urban areas like Mumbai is also a significant concern that the new policy aims to resolve. Currently, Maharashtra has one of the highest numbers of Remote Pilot Training Organizations (RPTOs), but a structured policy framework is urgently needed to support their growth.
