Chennai's Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has directed local corporations and municipalities to utilize their own funds for the enhancement of Amma Canteens, which have faced complaints regarding food quality and service. The municipal administration and water supply (MAWS) department's order emphasizes the need for local bodies, including the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), to procure necessary items such as vessels and fresh groceries, and to undertake building improvements like repainting walls. Currently, the GCC operates 383 canteens, while other municipalities manage 237. The GCC has already initiated refurbishment work worth ₹7.4 crore, focusing on upgrades for fewer than 100 canteens that require significant improvements. GCC commissioner Dr. G S Sameeran mentioned plans for better lighting and inviting environments to attract more patrons.
