Oona Hathaway, the Gerard C. and Bernice Latrobe Smith Professor of International Law, has been appointed president of the American Society of International Law (ASIL) during its recent annual meeting. In her keynote address, Hathaway acknowledged the unprecedented challenges facing international law today, stating that foundational principles and institutions are under significant strain. With ASIL founded in 1906 and chartered by Congress in 1950, it serves as a key organization for advancing international law scholarship and education in the U.S. Hathaway, who also holds positions at Yale University, emphasized the importance of innovative thinking in addressing current global legal challenges. Her research areas include accountability for the Russia-Ukraine war and reforms at the United Nations. Hathaway's extensive background includes advisory roles at the U.S. Department of State and the Defense Department, along with numerous publications on international law.
