Chandranath Rath, a 41-year-old aide to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari, was murdered in a targeted attack in Madhyamgram, West Bengal. Rath, a former Indian Air Force employee, was shot by motorcycle-borne assailants who intercepted his vehicle late Wednesday night. The police reported that the attackers executed the killing with precision, aiming directly at Rath while injuring the driver. This incident has heightened political tensions in West Bengal, which recently witnessed a significant electoral victory for the BJP, winning 207 out of 294 seats against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, led by Mamata Banerjee. Following the murder, BJP supporters expressed anger towards the TMC, while Adhikari urged calm and called for a thorough investigation. The TMC condemned the murder and demanded a court-monitored Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, alleging that the BJP was responsible for several violent incidents post-election. Increased police deployment and security measures have been implemented across Kolkata to prevent further unrest.
