Security for Suvendu Adhikari (Leader of Opposition in West Bengal) may be upgraded following the murder of his aide, Chandranath Rath, who was shot dead on Wednesday night near Kolkata airport. The attack occurred on a deserted stretch of Jessore Road while Rath was returning home to Michaelnagar in North 24 Parganas district. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants were on bikes and had likely planned the attack. In response to the incident, central security agencies are conducting a threat assessment of Adhikari's current Z-category security cover, which is provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Adhikari has indicated that the murder appears politically motivated, linking it to the ongoing tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress party. Rath's mother has publicly condemned the violence, calling for life imprisonment for the killers, and expressed her belief that the political climate in West Bengal has endangered her family since Adhikari's rise against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
