The Maharashtra Transport Department has launched a 100-day verification drive from May 1 to August 15 aimed at ensuring that commercial drivers can communicate effectively in Marathi. This initiative also targets illegal transport operations that continue to thrive despite earlier enforcement actions. The drive will be implemented through all 59 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), where dedicated officers will conduct field inspections and engage directly with drivers to assess their communication skills in Marathi. Rather than relying on formal examinations, the focus is on practical spoken interactions supported by a new 'Practical Marathi' guidebook that standardizes essential phrases for drivers. The initiative aims to create a continuous compliance framework, with regular monitoring and support from transport unions. Additionally, the drive will address persistent issues of illegal transport operations, particularly in high-demand urban areas, by conducting widespread inspections and initiating legal action against violations. This coordinated approach marks a shift from reactive enforcement to a proactive compliance strategy, aiming to curb illegal transport practices effectively.
