Beginning May 1, the Maharashtra state transport department will launch a 100-day campaign to enforce mandatory proficiency in the Marathi language for taxi and autorickshaw drivers. This initiative aims to improve communication with local passengers and will involve inspections across all 59 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). During the campaign, the department will check for compliance, take action against illegal transport operations, and provide language training for drivers who are not fluent in Marathi. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik stated that while strict actions will be taken against rule violations, driving licenses will not be canceled solely for lacking Marathi skills. The campaign follows a recent inspection in Mira-Bhayander, where out of 3,443 autorickshaws checked, 565 drivers could not demonstrate basic Marathi proficiency. Support for language training will be offered at RTOs, including study materials and government-issued certificates for those who complete the training. The initiative has garnered mixed reactions from drivers, with some emphasizing the need for adequate training facilities and time to learn without impacting their earnings.
