The civil hospitals in Sangrur, Moga, and Ferozepur districts in Punjab, India, have failed to qualify for the Kayakalp ranking, an initiative by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that assesses public health facilities on cleanliness and hygiene standards. The recent evaluation revealed that Ludhiana Civil Hospital secured the top position in the state, followed by Patiala and Amritsar hospitals. In contrast, the hospitals in Sangrur, Moga, and Ferozepur were cited for their inadequate hygiene practices. Dr. Vinod Kumar, senior medical officer at Sangrur Civil Hospital, attributed the poor ranking to delayed renovations due to the construction of a new medical college. Meanwhile, Dr. Raman Singla, the civil surgeon in Moga, pointed out staffing shortages, particularly the vacant position of deputy medical commissioner, which hampers their ability to maintain necessary standards. Former assistant civil surgeon Surinder Singla expressed disappointment that Sangrur, the home district of the state’s chief minister, did not rank better. Health Minister Balbir Singh acknowledged the hard work of health officers but noted that some lack administrative capabilities. The Kayakalp initiative, launched in May 2015, aims to enhance hygiene in public health facilities as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
