The Maharashtra state government has announced a waiver of development charges for all projects undertaken by the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), a leading cancer care institute. This decision, communicated through a notification from the urban development department, acknowledges TMC's financial constraints despite its global reputation. The exemption will apply to TMC's significant expansion project in Parel, a new 100-bed Ayurveda-based cancer hospital and research center in Khopoli, and a women and children’s wing at the Kharghar hospital. Previously, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had sought ₹252 crore (approximately $30 million USD) from TMC for its expansion. The waiver aligns with the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, which allows exemptions for properties owned by government entities. TMC, which treats about 10,000 cancer patients annually, provides substantial subsidies for economically weaker patients. Dr. Shailesh V Shrikhande, Chief Executive of the Tata Cancer Care Foundation, expressed gratitude for the support from the state government, highlighting the collaborative effort to enhance cancer care services.
