The Supreme Court of India, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, has urged high courts nationwide to establish grievance redressal committees at high court, district, and taluka levels to address tensions between the Bar and the Bench. This directive comes in the wake of a controversial incident in the Andhra Pradesh High Court on May 5, where a young lawyer faced rebuke from Justice Tarlada Rajasekhar Rao during a hearing. A video of the incident, which showed the lawyer apologizing profusely, circulated widely, prompting significant backlash from legal circles. The Supreme Court emphasized the necessity of institutional mechanisms to ensure timely and cordial resolution of disputes between judges and lawyers. It also highlighted the importance of judges displaying patience and encouragement towards young lawyers, stressing that the development of the Bar is crucial for the judiciary's strength. The Andhra Pradesh High Court has since formed a five-judge committee to foster better relations between the Bar and the Bench. The Supreme Court concluded that no further action was required from its end and cautioned against the irresponsible circulation of courtroom videos that lack context, as they can lead to unwarranted prejudice.
