The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India challenging the recent West Bengal election results. The party claims that voter deletions from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process significantly influenced the outcomes in 31 constituencies, with deletions surpassing the victory margins of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the recent elections, the BJP achieved a historic win, securing 207 seats and ending TMC's 15-year governance, which left TMC with only 80 seats. TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee highlighted that in some cases, the number of deleted voters closely matched the margin of victory, citing one instance where a candidate lost by 862 votes despite over 5,432 voters being removed from the rolls. The Supreme Court, during a hearing, indicated that TMC could submit fresh applications to address these concerns, while the Election Commission maintained that such issues should be resolved through formal election petitions. The court emphasized the need for an independent review of the claims if properly filed, while also expressing urgency in resolving pending appeals, which could take years at the current pace.
