In a landmark decision, the Punjab Cabinet has approved the regularisation of over 65,000 contractual and outsourced employees, ending the contract system in the state. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal praised the move as 'historic' and a first of its kind in India, emphasizing its significance for the families of the affected employees. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann elaborated that the policy change will eliminate middlemen, ensuring employees are directly hired by the government with salaries deposited into their bank accounts. Additionally, workers in high-risk jobs, such as firemen and linemen, will be regularised after three years of service instead of five. To further support employees, a special cabinet sub-committee will be established to resolve issues related to arrears and pensions. Mann also announced the creation of seven new special courts in Punjab to expedite corruption case resolutions. Following this cabinet approval, an ordinance is anticipated to formalise the regularisation process.
