The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has made significant gains in the recent Assembly elections, winning two out of four contested states, which positions it favorably for the upcoming 2027 Presidential elections in India. Notably, the NDA's success in West Bengal, where it crossed the 200-seat mark in the 294-member Assembly, enhances its vote share in the electoral college, as West Bengal has one of the highest MLA vote values in the country. Additionally, the NDA retained power in Assam and improved its standing in Puducherry, while also making gains in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, further solidifying its electoral position.
Uttar Pradesh, with its 403 MLAs contributing over 83,000 vote value, remains a pivotal state for the NDA. The upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab in early 2027 could significantly influence the Presidential race. The BJP's potential for expansion in Punjab, driven by recent political shifts, could add to its tally in the electoral college. However, the opposition will need to unify and perform well in these states to pose a serious challenge to the NDA, which has been steadily improving its position since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
