Police in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India, have arrested three individuals—Shubham Upadhyay (39), Vijay Wadhwa (45), and Nitin Agarwal (44)—for allegedly running a betting racket worth nearly ₹100 crore linked to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The arrests occurred following a tip-off, leading to a police interception of a vehicle on the Kanpur–Gwalior bypass, where the suspects attempted to flee, injuring two officers in the process. Authorities have identified eight additional suspects, including a senior leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and local officials, who are currently absconding. The police recovered evidence including eight mobile phones, a tablet, and ₹84,500 in cash, while also freezing bank accounts containing approximately ₹50 lakh (roughly $60,000 USD). Investigators discovered ledgers that detailed betting transactions amounting to around ₹100 crore. The arrested individuals have been remanded to judicial custody under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Gambling Act. The police have deployed multiple teams to capture the remaining suspects and dismantle the entire betting network operating in the district.
