On Friday, police in Patna, Bihar, resorted to lathicharge to disperse a large group of teaching job aspirants protesting the delay in the Bihar Public Service Commission’s (BPSC) fourth phase teacher recruitment notification. The protest, which began at Patna College and aimed to reach the BPSC office, was met with barricades set up by police near J P Golambar. Protesters claimed they were held for nearly two hours before tensions escalated, leading to clashes and injuries among demonstrators, including women candidates. Student leader Dilip Kumar criticized the BPSC for repeatedly delaying the recruitment process, stating that more than 13 lakh candidates are awaiting the notification, which had been promised for April. The police claimed that demonstrators became aggressive, prompting them to use “mild force” to restore order. The incident has sparked a political backlash, with opposition leaders like Tejashwi Yadav accusing the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government of neglecting unemployed youth. In response, newly appointed Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari assured the protesters that the government would work to resolve their issues. The TRE-4 recruitment is expected to fill around 46,000 teaching vacancies across various departments in Bihar, with the examination scheduled for late September.
