The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning regarding the hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship, which has reported eight cases and three deaths across countries including Argentina, South Africa, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and St Helena. The outbreak is associated with the Andes virus, known for its limited human-to-human transmission through close contact. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus indicated that due to the virus's incubation period of up to six weeks, more cases may emerge. The first symptoms were reported on April 6, leading to a series of infections and fatalities among passengers. Health authorities in affected countries are closely monitoring individuals linked to the outbreak, implementing strict containment measures onboard the ship, which is now heading to Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands. WHO emphasized the importance of international cooperation in managing the situation, stating that 'viruses do not care about politics.'
