On Thursday, over 300 students from Middle School Baluaha in Mahishi block, Saharsa district, Bihar, experienced stomachaches and nausea after consuming a mid-day meal (MDM) suspected to be contaminated with a dead snake. District Magistrate Deepesh Kumar confirmed that the students are receiving treatment at local health centers and are out of danger. He has instructed the District Education Officer (DEO) to file a First Information Report (FIR) against the responsible non-governmental organization (NGO) and the school management. Parents reported the incident after noticing their children falling ill shortly after the meal was served around 10 am. The DEO, Hemchandra, stated that a sample of the MDM has been taken for examination, and a probe is underway. The NGO, Bharat Ratna Dr B R Ambedkar Dalit Utthan Avom Shiksha Samiti, has previously faced complaints regarding the quality of meals supplied to schools in the district. The school headmaster, currently on leave, denied responsibility for the incident, emphasizing that the NGO is in charge of meal provision.
