On June 8, a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Maasim, Sarangani, leading to widespread devastation. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reported that nearly 18,000 individuals are currently housed in evacuation centers, with 5,043 families sheltered in 33 designated locations. The earthquake impacted 56 barangays across Regions IX, XI, and XII, affecting a total of 19,229 families or approximately 86,245 individuals. Casualties include at least 32 fatalities, 12 missing persons, and over 200 injuries. Initial damage assessments revealed that 17 houses were affected, with eight completely destroyed and nine partially damaged. In response, the DSWD has made available more than P5.29 billion in standby funds and relief resources to support ongoing humanitarian efforts and coordinate with local government units. The agency continues to monitor the situation and provide assistance to those affected by the disaster.
