The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is experiencing a surge of confidence following its significant electoral victory in West Bengal, which is expected to bolster its campaign for upcoming state Assembly elections. However, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will have to wait until 2029 to achieve a dominant position in the Rajya Sabha, where it currently holds 148 of the 245 seats. This number is 15 seats short of the 163 required for a two-thirds majority, which is essential for advancing key legislative measures, including constitutional amendments.
The NDA's current composition includes 113 BJP MPs, along with members from various regional parties. In the near term, there are 35 vacancies expected this year, but none are from West Bengal. The NDA is projected to win 4 of the 15 total vacancies across states like Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, while opposition parties are expected to secure 11 seats. In 2029, 6 of the 10 expected vacancies will arise in West Bengal, but these will be filled only after the Lok Sabha elections that year.
Overall, the NDA's strength could rise to 152 seats by the end of 2028, still falling short of the two-thirds majority. The outcome of crucial state elections in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh in 2027-28 will play a pivotal role in shaping the NDA's future in the Rajya Sabha, as these elections could alter the composition of state Assemblies and impact Rajya Sabha voting.
