The Election Commission of India has announced a re-poll in 15 polling booths across West Bengal following complaints of irregularities during the second phase of Assembly elections held on April 29, 2023. This re-poll will take place on May 2, 2023, from 7 AM to 6 PM. Most of the affected booths, totaling 11, are situated in the Magrahat Paschim constituency, while the remaining 4 are in the Diamond Harbour constituency in South 24 Parganas district. The decision was prompted by allegations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whose leader Amit Malviya claimed that voters in parts of Diamond Harbour, particularly in Falta, faced restrictions in choosing their preferred candidates. Additionally, there were accusations of tampering with the buttons on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). West Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, had previously stated that verified cases of EVM tampering would result in a re-poll. The Election Commission's decision aims to uphold the integrity of the electoral process. The counting of votes for the Assembly elections is scheduled for May 4, 2023.
