The Punjab Cabinet has approved the establishment of the Directorate of Forensic Science Services (DFS), previously known as the Forensic Science Laboratory, to enhance public safety through efficient crime investigation. This new body will operate under the Department of Home Affairs and will include the integration of the Chief Chemical Examiner Laboratory in Kharar as a Special Toxicology Division. The DFS will expand its capabilities by creating new technical divisions, including DNA analysis, Ballistics, Cyber Forensics, and more at the Regional Forensic Science Laboratories (RFSLs) in Amritsar, Bathinda, and Ludhiana. Furthermore, 28 Mobile Forensic Units (MFUs) will be established across police districts to improve evidence collection at crime scenes.
