Prayagraj district in Uttar Pradesh, India, is currently experiencing a severe shortage of LPG cylinders, impacting thousands of households. Official data indicates a backlog of nearly 2.66 lakh cylinders, with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) having 1.44 lakh pending deliveries. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) are also facing significant shortages of approximately 62,000 and 60,000 cylinders, respectively. District Supply Officer Sunil Singh has stated that there is no actual shortage of LPG, attributing the delays to increased advance bookings due to concerns over potential disruptions from geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region. Residents, however, are still struggling, with many arriving at gas agencies as early as midnight to secure their bookings, only to leave empty-handed after long waits. Delays are also common after the issuance of the delivery authentication code (DAC), with some consumers reporting waits of seven to eight days or more. Officials have instructed agencies to expedite deliveries and are monitoring the situation closely, but the backlog remains a significant challenge for families relying on LPG for cooking.
