West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari unveiled a new 'detect, delete, deport' policy targeting illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh during a press conference on Wednesday. This policy is part of a broader strategy to enhance border security, which includes transferring a 27-km stretch of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for fencing and construction of border outposts along the India-Bangladesh border. Under this framework, infiltrators detained by state police will be directly handed over to the BSF for deportation. However, those belonging to seven communities protected under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) will be exempt from this process and will not face harassment. Adhikari emphasized the need for better coordination between state and central authorities to address infiltration, criticizing the previous government's lack of action on this front. He noted that out of the 4,096-km border with Bangladesh, about 563 km remains unfenced, highlighting significant gaps in security. The new measures reflect a decisive shift in policy towards stricter border management, a key issue for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
