Nandini Chakraborty, who made history as West Bengal’s first woman Chief Secretary, has been appointed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to oversee crucial border security operations, particularly the transfer of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for fencing along the international border with Bangladesh. This decision comes after her controversial tenure as Chief Secretary, which lasted only two months, ending shortly after the announcement of the 2026 assembly election dates. Her removal was seen as a move by the Election Commission to maintain a fair electoral environment.

Chakraborty, a West Bengal cadre IAS officer with significant experience in various key positions, including State Home Secretary, is now tasked with ensuring the smooth transfer of land to the BSF, a priority for the new BJP government. The cabinet aims to complete this transfer within 45 days, marking a notable shift in policy from the previous administration led by Mamata Banerjee, which often had strained relations with the BSF. Additionally, Chakraborty will oversee the implementation of centrally-sponsored development projects, positioning her at the nexus of state and central government operations during a politically sensitive period.
