West Bengal's Food and Supply Minister Ashok Kirtania confirmed the state's commitment to transferring land to the Border Security Force (BSF) within 45 days for the construction of a border fence along the India-Bangladesh border. This decision follows a cabinet meeting of the newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, which authorized the transfer of around 600 acres of land. Kirtania noted that while land acquisition in most parts of North 24 Parganas district is proceeding smoothly, there are challenges in the Basirhat area, where some residents are resisting relocation and rehabilitation efforts. The minister has directed the district magistrate to resolve these issues within a week to ensure the project stays on track. Currently, West Bengal shares approximately 2,217 km of border with Bangladesh, with 1,648 km already fenced, leaving 569 km uncovered, of which 456 km is feasible for fencing. The BJP has criticized the previous Trinamool Congress government for delays in land acquisition, a claim the TMC has denied.
