On Saturday, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu launched the ‘Jal Sanchay Abhiyaan’ in New Delhi, an initiative by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) aimed at rejuvenating 101 water bodies to enhance water conservation and ecological sustainability. This program aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for environmental sustainability. The DDA oversees 822 water bodies, with 424 identified for restoration. The first phase targets the revival of these water bodies, covering approximately 155 hectares, with a completion date set for August 30, 2026. The identified locations span various zones, including 22 in Dwarka and 17 in Rohini, among others. Sandhu emphasized that this initiative is not just about beautification but is a crucial step towards ecological restoration and sustainable urban development. The restoration process will include dredging and clearing natural catchment channels to improve rainwater harvesting. Looking ahead, the second phase, scheduled for completion by May 2027, will implement long-term sustainability measures, including fencing and sewage treatment plants around the restored water bodies. This initiative is a response to the degradation of Delhi's historical water bodies due to urbanization and waste dumping.
