The Election Commission of India has identified over 200 locations in West Bengal as prone to violence due to historical poll-related unrest. To address this, the Commission has directed District Magistrates (DMs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), and Commissioners of Police (CPs) to conduct field visits and build confidence among voters in these areas. Administrative teams have already started outreach efforts, which will intensify over the next 72 hours. A new helpline has been established for voters to report intimidation or threats. Additionally, the Commission is enhancing transparency through webcasting, with rehearsals set to begin five days before the elections. Strict actions will be taken against any irregularities detected during the polling process. The upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal are scheduled for April 23 and 29, with results to be declared on May 4. The elections follow a significant contest in 2021, where the Trinamool Congress (TMC) won 213 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made notable gains, securing 77 seats.
