A significant event in Indian electoral history is set to unfold as the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) for the Chandivali Assembly seat in Maharashtra will be re-examined starting at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday. This decision follows a Bombay High Court ruling that allows for the recount, prompted by allegations from Congress leader Naseem Khan regarding potential tampering and improper programming of the EVMs. Khan, who finished second in the election with 1,04,016 votes (43.72% share), had initially sought the recount in November 2024, but the process was delayed pending court approval. The winning candidate, Dilip Bhausaheb Lande from the Shiv Sena, received 1,24,641 votes (52.39% share). Khan described the court's decision as “historic,” marking the first instance where votes cast through EVMs will undergo a re-examination in India, highlighting ongoing concerns about the integrity of electronic voting systems.
