The Indian government is prioritizing the adoption of flex-fuel vehicles to enhance energy security, as stated by Sujata Sharma, joint secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG). This initiative comes in response to supply disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted the need to achieve 100% ethanol blending in petrol to promote energy self-reliance. Currently, India blends 20% ethanol with petrol, but there has been pushback regarding increasing this percentage due to concerns over vehicle mileage. To support alternative fuel consumption, the government has received 467 applications for compressed natural gas (CNG) and compressed biogas (CBG) dispensing stations, with 157 applications granted final licenses and 38 receiving prior approvals. Additionally, 41 biogas cylinder filling and storage plants have been approved, and Petronet LNG has been authorized to expand its regasification capacity at the Dahej terminal to 22.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).
