Set in 1930s Taiwan under Japanese colonial rule, the novel follows two women on a culinary journey, intertwining themes of love, food, and history. Its inventive format presents the story as a fictional translation of a rediscovered Japanese travel memoir, complete with footnotes, leading many readers to initially believe it was a historical text. Prior to this accolade, ‘Taiwan Travelogue’ had already garnered significant recognition, winning the National Book Award for Translated Literature and the Baifang Schell Book Prize. The novel has also been translated or is set to be translated into multiple languages, including Japanese, Korean, and German. The International Booker Prize, which honors outstanding works of fiction translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland, emphasizes the importance of literary translation, with this year’s judging panel praising the novel for its exploration of language and power.
