Pune, India, is set to enhance its traffic management through the deployment of AI-based cameras under the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil announced that these cameras will issue automatic fines for violations at nearly 500 locations across the city. This initiative aims to enforce traffic rules more effectively, with expectations that up to 99% of fines will be generated by the system. Patil highlighted that Pune's traffic issues stem from rapid, unplanned urban growth and outdated infrastructure, resulting in a significant gap between vehicle numbers—78 lakh vehicles—and available road area, which is only 7%. The administration is focusing on both immediate and long-term solutions, including improving road hierarchy and reducing traffic signals. Notably, only 11% of the population currently utilizes public transport, indicating a need for increased public transit use to alleviate congestion. The announcement was made during the Pune Social Impact Dialogue, which brought together various stakeholders to discuss collaboration across Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives.
