A team of researchers from KAIST and Gangnam Severance Hospital has developed an innovative AI technology aimed at enhancing the initial psychiatric consultation process. This system allows patients to engage with AI before meeting their doctors, helping them articulate their symptoms and medical history more effectively. The AI analyzes patient responses in real time, generating pertinent questions and employing counseling techniques such as empathy and clarification to ease communication. In trials involving 1,440 virtual patients, the AI successfully gathered critical clinical information within approximately 30 minutes. It also creates a clinical dashboard that provides doctors with an overview of symptoms and potential conditions, enabling them to focus on deeper counseling during the actual consultation. The researchers emphasize that the AI is not intended to replace doctors, but rather to serve as a supportive tool that streamlines information collection, allowing medical professionals to make informed decisions. This study was presented at the ACM CHI 2026 conference, highlighting the potential for AI to transform psychiatric care.
