A Lake District cafe has had the last laugh after its breakfast was criticised by a TikTok reviewer. The negative clip, slating the £13.95 price of a large breakfast at Herdwicks Cafe in Coniston, appeared on the platform earlier this week and sparked a flurry of 'nasty comments' and 'fake reviews'. Owner Gemma Metcalfe, who had been confronted by the reviewer during his visit, broke down in tears as she shared details of the incident on Facebook and pleaded with customers for their support. Click here to keep up to date with the latest Family news in our newsletter "Yesterday we had a guy in that was recording on Meta glasses - glasses with cameras on - he's a TikToker apparently and he has put a post on about Herdwicks and he confronted me about the prices of breakfasts," she said. "So I just simply explained the reason the breakfasts are £13.95 and the outgoings and the fact I don't pay my fantastic staff minimum wage and I thought that was the end of it. But then he's put it on this TikTok account and the comments have been horrendous - like I really want to just give up right now." With fake reviews being added in the comments of the TikTok video, she added: "So I'm asking all of you, if you can and if you like Herdwicks, please could you get on Google and leave me some reviews, because this has absolutely broke my heart, I don't know what I've done to deserve this. "I love you all, I love the cafe, the dogs that come in, it's fabulous, I love my staff, but this has really broke me tonight." What Gemma wasn't expecting was the support that flooded in following her video. Thousands of people reacted to her Facebook post criticising the reviewer and praising the cafe. And hundreds left positive reviews on Google, where the family-run cafe has a 4.7 star rating. Commenting on Facebook, one customer said: "We love Herdwicks and always come in several times during our visits to Coniston. All our family and friends bring our dogs in and we are always welcomed and enjoy fabulous food. It’s our favourite cafe in the Lakes." Another said: "Anyone who’s actually been to Herdwicks knows the effort, care and hard graft that goes into the place. The food, atmosphere and service are all exceptional. One of my favourite places to visit whenever I’m back in the Lakes. Keep your head up love." Gemma told the Manchester Evening News: "It wasn’t the fact he didn’t like the breakfast, or thought it wasn’t worth it, it was the personal attack from people that had never met me and the comments relating to a young member of staff. "We have had one star reviews in the past and it hurts. We really don’t want people to not enjoy themselves, humans and dogs, but when the notifications started one after another all saying 'expensive' and 'rude owner/staff', it broke my heart." She said the criticism came after a 13-hour shift as the cafe has been busier than ever because Donald Campbell's restore Bluebird has been back on Coniston Water as part of a week-long event. "I posted the first video hoping that we would maybe get four or five reviews, but the response has really blown me away," she said. "I honestly can’t believe how much attention it has got. Locals have brought me flowers, chocolates and wine. People have come in just to give me a hug, I’ve had phone calls from down south. "A food critic came in and gave us a fab review, but what got me the most was the amount of people that took their time to reach out to me via Whatsapp, and Messenger and posted/shared the video. It really made me more emotional. I wish I could hug and thank each and everyone properly, they have been amazing." Many of the comments on the TikTok reel have been deleted following the support given to Gemma.
